The mariachi Mass that came to Houston in 1967
At St. Joseph Catholic Church in Houston’s Sixth Ward, Mariachi Norteño —founded in 1959— plays the Misa Panamericana, the Mass written for mariachi in Cuernavaca in 1966. It came to Houston because Father Patricio Flores organized a trip to Cuernavaca with the musicians in 1967, and they have played it at the 12:30 service ever since, according to a 2014 NPR report. Flores went on to become the Catholic Church’s first Mexican American bishop.
If your wedding or quinceañera includes a Mass with mariachi, ask your parish first: Houston has the tradition, but each parish decides.
Houston has no area page on ZONAS: when we measured it, the surrounding cities only added 3 or 4 groups to the city’s own.
