How much does it cost to hire a mariachi, a norteño group or a banda?
Updated October 13, 2026. Every figure lists its source at the end.
There is no single price. It depends on how many musicians come, how many hours they play, the day, the season and the distance. Here we bring together what US booking sites publish and the survey by Mexico's consumer agency, Profeco, so you can ask for a quote knowing what to expect.
ZONAS doesn't sell performances or take a commission: you agree on the price directly with the group. That's why this guide doesn't give a ZONAS price, only what the sources say.
The short answer
- Mariachi in the US: $350 to $650 an hour, according to GigSalad, depending on the city, how many musicians come and their experience. Most are booked for one hour.
- Mariachi in Mexico: according to Profeco (2022), the average hourly rate ranged from about MX$2,600 in Puebla to MX$5,364 in Sinaloa. It was MX$3,800 in Jalisco and MX$4,640 in Nuevo León.
- Norteño group in Mexico: MX$2,000 to MX$2,500 an hour in Mexico City, the State of Mexico and Guanajuato, according to the same survey.
- Sinaloa-style banda: most of the bandas Profeco surveyed in Sinaloa charged MX$3,000 to MX$5,000 an hour. A few well-known bandas ask for much more.
- Norteño or banda in the US: we couldn't find a reliable published average. As a reference, GigSalad estimates that a professional Latin band costs $750 to $1,250 for two hours.

Average price in Mexican pesos for September 15, 2022. «—»: the survey doesn't have the figure.
An extra song cost about MX$190 to MX$440.
In Sinaloa, the banda average is pulled up by a few very well-known bandas that asked for MX$10,000 to MX$60,000 an hour. Most charged MX$3,000 to MX$5,000.
What moves the price
- How many musicians come. In the Profeco survey, most mariachis came with 6 to 9 musicians, norteño groups with 4 or 5, and Sinaloa bandas with 10 to 18.
- Hours and minimums. Many groups have a minimum number of hours, and some discount the second or third: 9.5% of the groups surveyed offered a deal like that.
- The date. High-demand dates tend to cost more; in the survey, several groups charged differently on September 15 than on September 30.
- Distance and sound. Ask whether the price includes travel and the sound system: they aren't always included.
- Fame. A well-known group can charge many times what a local one does: in Sinaloa, one banda asked for MX$60,000 an hour.
Contract, guarantee and payment
From the same Profeco survey, with groups in Mexico:
- Ask for a contract. 92% of bandas, 87% of norteño groups and 68% of mariachis provided one.
- Ask what happens if they can't make it. 46% of bandas and 40% of mariachis couldn't say what guarantee they offered; those who could either refunded the money or sent another group.
- Have cash or a bank transfer ready. 99% accepted cash and 53% bank transfers; only 4% took credit cards.
How much should you tip?
In the US, according to GigSalad, the standard is 10% to 15%, or $25 to $50 per musician, based on how they played and how well they accommodated what you asked for. Tipping is up to you.
What to ask before paying a deposit
- How many musicians come, and with which instruments?
- How many hours does the price include, and how much is an extra hour?
- Does it include sound and travel?
- How much is the deposit, and when is the rest due?
- Will I get a contract or a receipt?
- What happens if you can't make it?
- How much is an extra song?
