In Sinaloa, banda is also called “tambora,” after the drum that gives it its beat. Here’s how many groups ZONAS has for each genre, what they charge and where to find them.
ZONAS doesn’t sell performances or take a commission: you talk directly with the group, and the deal is between you.
The tambora, from Culiacán to the records
After the Revolution, Sinaloan bandas averaged 9 to 12 musicians: clarinets, trumpets, trombones, charcheta, tuba, snare drum and tambora, the bass drum with cymbals that gives the music its name, according to Helena Simonett in the liner notes of “Bandas sinaloenses: música tambora,” in the Smithsonian Folkways archive. The album’s historic recordings include bandas from Culiacán, such as Los Guamuchileños and Los Tamazulas.
In Profeco’s 2022 survey, Sinaloan bandas had 10 to 18 musicians.
Culiacán has no area page on ZONAS: when we measured it, the neighboring municipalities didn’t add groups to the city’s own.
